CAREER PATH

Technology

Use software, data and digital systems to create products at scale.

Technology career

THE REALITY

Before you choose it.

Technology is wider than software engineering. Product management, data, AI, cybersecurity, cloud, design engineering and developer relations all sit around modern digital products. A degree can help, but demonstrable ability is especially important.

Common degrees

CS / IT / engineering / maths and related fields

Alternative route

BCA + strong portfolio / specialised learning

Strong signal

Working projects, GitHub, internships and problem solving

Major domains

Software, AI/data, cloud, security and product

WAYS IN

Three practical routes.

01ROUTE

Software Engineering

Build reliable software and services.

  1. 1.Learn one programming language well
  2. 2.Master data structures and core CS concepts
  3. 3.Build and deploy real projects
  4. 4.Learn testing, Git and basic system design
  5. 5.Intern and specialise by problem domain
02ROUTE

Data / AI

Use data, statistics and machine learning to answer questions and build intelligent systems.

  1. 1.Build maths, statistics and Python foundations
  2. 2.Learn data handling and visualisation
  3. 3.Study ML concepts and evaluation
  4. 4.Build projects on real datasets
  5. 5.Specialise into analytics, ML engineering or research
03ROUTE

Cybersecurity / Cloud

Protect systems and build reliable infrastructure.

  1. 1.Learn networking, Linux and operating-system basics
  2. 2.Practise secure configuration and threat thinking
  3. 3.Build labs and document what you learn
  4. 4.Pursue internships and relevant certifications where useful
  5. 5.Specialise into security, cloud, SRE or infrastructure

OPPORTUNITIES

Where it can lead.

  • Software engineering
  • AI/ML and data
  • Cloud and infrastructure
  • Cybersecurity
  • Product management
  • Developer tools and platforms
  • Technology consulting

CHALLENGES

What people underestimate.

  • Technology changes quickly; learning never really stops.
  • Portfolio quality matters more than collecting tutorials.
  • Entry-level competition can be high.
  • Some roles involve significant screen time and delivery pressure.

TRADE-OFFS

There is no perfect route.

ChoiceUpsideTrade-off
Degree vs self-taughtDegrees provide structure, peers and recruiting access.Self-learning can be faster but demands discipline and proof of skill.
Big tech vs startupLarge firms offer scale and systems; startups offer breadth.Stability, scope, mentorship and risk differ.
Specialise early vs exploreEarly depth can accelerate technical growth.Premature specialisation can hide better-fit domains.

ROADMAP

What to do next.

  1. 01School: coding + maths + curiosity
  2. 02UG/learning: CS fundamentals and real projects
  3. 03Year 1–2: Git, databases, APIs and software practices
  4. 04Year 2–3: internships + deeper specialisation
  5. 05Final year: portfolio + interview preparation
  6. 06Early career: specialise while maintaining broad systems understanding

TALK TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS

Ask a technology professional what skills they actually use every week, what portfolio work helped them, and how they chose their first specialisation.
